As a licensed acupuncturist and an experienced organizer, Mark-Anthony Johnson serves as the Director of Health and Wellness at Dignity and Power Now. In this capacity, he provides strategic support for DPN’s two member-led campaigns. The first campaign is for a legally empowered and independent civilian oversight commission of the sheriff’s department; the second was created to stop Los Angeles’s proposed $2.3 billion jail construction plan. He also leads the Building Resilience project of DPN, a collaboration of formerly incarcerated people, organizers, healthcare providers, and academics whose goal is to decarcerate the county jails via the diversion of incarcerated people into community-based treatment. In addition, Mark-Anthony currently serves as a member of the Movement for Black Lives Policy Platform leadership team, which has facilitated the national development and launch of the #VisionforBlackLives Policy Platform.
